Hyperscalers Scaling Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure: Meta Moves Custom AI Hardware to Assembly Line to Meet Growing Processing Demands

Meta Platforms plans to start manufacturing a proprietary artificial intelligence chip this coming September. An internal memo reviewed by Reuters shows that this move supports a broader corporate plan to boost overall computing power to 14 gigawatts next year. By shifting production to the assembly line, the technology firm scales its artificial intelligence infrastructure to meet rapidly growing processing demands across its global network.

The data center chip, code-named ‘Iris,’ represents part of a four-generation project for Meta Training and Inference Accelerators that the company designs completely in-house. Meta will use this custom-built silicon to improve the artificial intelligence systems that power its Facebook and Instagram social media platforms. Engineers spent only six weeks testing the chip and found no major issues during that period. This relatively quick bug-testing completion signals positive momentum for an in-house hardware effort that floundered since its launch more than half a decade ago.

Meta tailored this specific chip to match its unique internal needs. To ensure production success, the firm works closely with Broadcom to help design the hardware and partners with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to manufacture it. This collaborative approach will likely help the social media firm lower its massive computing costs over time. Furthermore, creating its own hardware allows the company to gain more independence from major third-party chip suppliers such as Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices.

The successful completion of the bug-testing phase and the exact September production timing have not been previously reported. This shift toward self-made silicon changes how major internet corporations manage their massive data center expenditures. By controlling both the software algorithms and the physical processing units, technology companies can optimize their services much faster than before, altering the competitive dynamics of the hardware industry. Meta prepares its global data centers for the arrival of the first shipment of custom processors.
