Chinese State-Sponsored Cyber Espionage Targeting US Networks Raises Security Concerns 

US authorities have disrupted an alleged Chinese state-sponsored cyber espionage campaign that targeted sensitive networks across the country, including systems linked to NASA, the US Senate, the Federal Reserve and the Departments of Justice and Energy. According to the US Justice Department and court documents, the campaign also targeted hospitals, telecommunications companies, power providers, financial institutions and defence contractors. 

The wide range of targets has raised concerns about the potential reach of the operation and the information that may have been accessed. The Chinese state-sponsored cyber espionage campaign is believed to have started in 2018 and continued through 2026, according to an FBI agent’s affidavit. Months or potentially years were spent by the FBI and the National Security Agency investigating and monitoring the suspected operation. The complete extent of the cyber-espionage campaign is still unknown. The scope of the access and the possible damage resulting from the breaches remain undisclosed by US officials in any detailed manner.  

Such details could involve sensitive counterintelligence information and may not be made public.
