Anthropic Stock Market Debut: Revenue Jumps 45% to $16.8bn

Anthropic is courting investors ahead of its expected stock market debut, and the numbers are central to its pitch. Anthropic revenue rose 45% to $16.8bn (£12.7bn) in the three months to the end of September, the BBC understands. At an event at its San Francisco headquarters, the company also told investors it made an adjusted profit in the third quarter. That measure leaves out non-recurring costs.
Anthropic revenue has risen every quarter this year, from $4.7bn in the first three months to $11.6bn in the second. Investors reportedly left the event optimistic about the growth and the path to profitability.
The company also put AI safety on the agenda. In September, one of its researchers warned of a greater than 10% chance that AI could “kill all humans” within a decade, and a former researcher said people building the technology were “genuinely frightened”. Anthropic said that month it had disrupted attempts to use its model for “malicious activity” that could support biological weapons. Chief executive Dario Amodei has called for the pace of development to slow.
US President Donald Trump sees it differently. He said researchers were “bringing up things that won’t happen” and that “whoever wins AI, wins”.
Ahead of the Anthropic stock market debut, quarterly figures from Anthropic and OpenAI serve as a gauge of whether the industry can pay for the infrastructure it needs. Markets are jumpy on that question. US chip makers AMD, Nvidia and Intel fell sharply on Wednesday. On Thursday, SoftBank dropped more than 9% in Asia, Samsung fell 9.5% and SK Hynix 11%.
The slide followed remarks on AI spending by Broadcom chief executive Hock Tan, who said in Singapore on Monday that many investors have “no clue” and hold “extreme expectations”. US inflation data released Wednesday added pressure. It showed September price rises accelerating by more than expected, raising worries that the Federal Reserve will lift borrowing costs.
No date has been given for the Anthropic stock market debut. OpenAI is also eyeing a listing expected to value it at more than $1tn, though chief executive Sam Altman said in September the company will not go public this year while it addresses safety concerns.
