13 Bay Area Starbucks Locations Set to Close This Week

At least 13 Starbucks locations across the San Francisco Bay Area are set to permanently close as the coffee chain begins another round of store cutbacks. Starbucks announced plans to close 250 underperforming coffeehouses in North America, with the affected Bay Area stores expected to stop operating after September 26.

The Bay Area Starbucks closures include locations in Concord, Gilroy, Hercules, Lafayette, Millbrae, Mountain View, San Carlos, San Jose, Santa Rosa, South San Francisco, and Walnut Creek.

The 13 stores listed for closure are:

Concord: 1701 Willow Pass Road

Gilroy: 795 First St.

Hercules: 3700 San Pablo Ave.

Lafayette: 3547 Mount Diablo Blvd.

Millbrae: 119 N. Rollins Road

Mountain View: 1037 El Monte Ave.

San Carlos: 1135 Industrial Road

San Carlos: 1187 San Carlos Ave.

San Jose: 1205 The Alameda

Santa Rosa: 138 Calistoga Road

Santa Rosa: 2240 Mendocino Ave.

South San Francisco: 176 N. Gateway Blvd.

Walnut Creek: 1663 N. California St.

Employees at two of the listed locations confirmed September 26 as their final business day when contacted by ABC7. Starbucks later said stores scheduled to close would display signage informing customers and that the final operating day was Saturday, though dates could vary by location.

The latest Bay Area Starbucks closures are part of the second major round of store shutdowns under Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol, who joined Starbucks in 2024. Last September, the company closed 627 stores across North America and Europe and eliminated 900 non-retail positions.

Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said the affected coffeehouses either were not producing acceptable financial results or could not deliver the experience Starbucks expects for customers and employees.

The company has not disclosed how many of the 250 planned closures are in the US or how many affected stores are unionized.

Starbucks is continuing to retrofit its North American stores, with about 1,500 locations expected to receive upgrades by September 30, the end of its fiscal year. The company says the work is intended to make stores more comfortable and inviting.

For employees affected by the Bay Area Starbucks closures, the company said it will try to transfer workers to other locations where possible. Severance support will be provided when transfers are not available.

Despite the closures, Starbucks said it remains committed to expanding its North American store network. The company also laid off another 300 corporate employees in May and closed some underused US offices.
